Bentley Continental GT W12: Pops & Bangs on the Stock Exhaust
A 2019 Bentley Continental GT W12 came in for an ECU remap and pops & bangs (afterfire) tuning — with one detail that makes this build genuinely rare: the exhaust is completely stock.
Pops & bangs on a W12 is uncommon anywhere in the world. Doing it on the factory exhaust, tuned aggressive from low RPM, makes this one of the more unusual cars we have worked on.

The Car: Continental GT W12 (2019)
The current-generation Continental GT carries Bentley’s 6.0L twin-turbo W12 — an engine now at the end of its production life, which makes every W12 car increasingly special. The owner, an international customer based in Japan, wanted two things: more power, and a serious exhaust sound without touching the factory exhaust system.

The Work: CMD Flash via OBD
We read and wrote the ECU with CMD Flash through the OBD port — no ECU removal, no hardware modification to the car.

- Custom pops & bangs calibration
The engine ECU on this car is the Bosch MED17.1.6. Reference Stage 1 figures for the 635hp W12:
| Stock | Stage 1 | Gain | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power | 635 hp | 680 hp | +45 hp |
| Torque | 900 Nm | 1,000 Nm | +100 Nm |

“Make It Aggressive” — Tuned in Three Stages
The request was simple: aggressive, and strong even at low RPM. Rather than writing one file and calling it done, we tuned the afterfire in three progressive stages, increasing intensity each time and letting the owner hear the result on the actual car before going further. Pops & bangs is not about maximum volume — it is about dialing the character in until it matches what the owner wants.
Stock Exhaust. Real Afterfire.
The key takeaway from this build: pops & bangs is created in the ECU, not in the exhaust. An aftermarket exhaust is not a requirement. If you want the sound but prefer to keep your car factory-original, ECU-based afterfire tuning is exactly the right approach. Learn more about how it works on our Pops & Bangs page.
