2022 GR Supra A90 Dragon Afterfire: Japan’s Hardest-Flaming Supra (Locked ECU Unlock + Pops & Bangs)
Turn the volume up. What you are watching is not a few polite crackles on overrun — this 2022 GR Supra throws sustained, repeatable flames on demand. We have built pops & bangs calibrations on a lot of cars, and we have never had an individual car breathe fire this hard. Owners here started calling it the “dragon afterfire”, and the name stuck.
Getting there was anything but a standard flash job. The 2022+ A90 runs a locked BMW-based ECU that no off-the-shelf tool can read or write. When we did this build, cracking it meant shipping the ECU overseas. Today, we unlock these ECUs in-house — same day. Here is the full story.

The Challenge: Afterfire on a Locked 2022+ ECU
If you own a 2019–2021 A90, tuning is easy mode — the ECU reads over OBD and every mainstream tool supports it. From MY2022, that door closed. The updated ECU carries a hardened lock: it cannot be read over OBD, and conventional bench tools cannot pull the file either. Most shops simply turn these cars away.
At the time of this build, there was exactly one company overseas capable of unlocking this generation of ECU. So we pulled the unit and sent it to them.
How We Did It — From a Locked ECU to Flames
1. Locating and removing the ECU
On the A90 the ECU sits vertically on the right side of the engine bay. Out it comes.
2. Overseas bench unlock (about 10 days door to door)
DHL from Japan takes only 2–3 days each way — faster than most people expect. The unlock itself depends on the partner’s queue; this time the ECU was back in our hands about 10 days after shipping out.
3. Building the calibration from a factory base file
Here is the quirk: once this ECU is unlocked, you still cannot dump the data from the physical unit. Instead, the OEM base file is supplied directly, and we build the pops & bangs calibration on top of it — overrun fueling and ignition strategy tuned for a loud, clean crackle without lazy, sooty burble.
4. OBD install and start-up confirmation
With the lock gone, the finished file flashes straight in through the diagnostic port. No permanent hardware modification, fully reversible.
The Result — How Much Fire Are We Talking About?
The B58 rewards this work like few engines do — but this particular car is on another level. Lift off above 3,000 rpm and it answers with a hard volley of bangs; hold the overrun and it pushes a continuous tongue of flame out of the tailpipe, not the single blink-and-you-miss-it puff most “flame tune” videos show. Among every car that has come through our shop and our nationwide partner network, no individual car has produced afterfire like this one.
Why this car? It is the stack-up: the B58’s single-turbo inline-6 keeps exhaust energy high on overrun, the exhaust routing on this chassis carries unburned mixture all the way out, and the calibration meters exactly how much fuel to ignite — and when — so the flame sustains instead of coughing once and dying. 2026 Update: We Now Unlock These ECUs In-House, Same Day
Everything above describes how this build went at the time — ECU out of the car, DHL overseas, roughly ten days door to door. That era is over. mbFAST Tuning now runs the bench-unlock process entirely in-house in Japan. FAQ
Can you really tune 2022+ locked GR Supras?
Yes — and as of 2026 the unlock is done in-house in a single day. Once unlocked, the car accepts OBD flashes like any earlier A90, including future map revisions.
Are pops & bangs safe for the B58?
Calibrated conservatively, yes. Our maps limit overrun events by temperature and load so the crackle stays a party trick, not a turbo killer. Aggressive “flame maps” from cheap file services are a different story — that is exactly what we refuse to install.
Why does this Supra flame harder than other pops & bangs cars?
Three things have to line up: an engine that keeps exhaust energy high on overrun (the B58 does), an exhaust path that delivers the mixture to the tip, and a calibration that sustains ignition instead of firing one pop. Most off-the-shelf files only manage the last part halfway. This car had all three — which is why it out-flames every other individual car we have tuned.
Is it reversible?
Fully. The calibration flashes back to stock over OBD at any time.
Is this street legal?
Regulations differ by country and region. Loud afterfire calibrations are intended for closed-course and off-street use — check your local noise and vehicle regulations.
