Toyota HiAce ECU Tuning (1GD-FTV 2.8 Diesel): +60 hp / +150 Nm — Gen 4 to the New Gen 9

Gen 7/8 HiAce — sound after the Stage 1 flash

The Toyota HiAce is the definitive working van — and its 1GD-FTV 2.8-litre turbo diesel is one of the most rewarding engines to tune that Toyota makes. From our headquarters in Japan, mbFAST Tuning has flashed every generation of the diesel HiAce, from Gen 4 vans that other shops handle easily to the Gen 9 with its new-generation DENSO ECU, which we were — to our knowledge — the first in Japan to crack. This page covers what a proper Stage 1 flash does on the 1GD-FTV, which generations we support, and how overseas workshops can work with us.

Stage 1 on the 1GD-FTV: the numbers

Engine1GD-FTV — 2.8 L diesel turbo (same family as Hilux / Land Cruiser Prado)
Stock output151 ps / 300 Nm
After Stage 1up to +60 hp / +150 Nm
MethodOBD flash on current generations — no piggyback box, ECU data itself is recalibrated
TimeRead 30 min · calibration ~1 h · write 10 min (same-day)
Emissions hardwareDPF / EGR retained — passes Japanese shaken

This is a true ECU recalibration, not a piggyback module. Piggyback boxes fake the boost-sensor signal to trick the ECU; results are inconsistent and they can do nothing about limiters or anything else living inside the ECU logic. One HiAce we tuned arrived with a piggyback fitted — the owner reported no noticeable difference. After our flash, the gain was obvious on the drive home. The factory 160 km/h speed limiter can also be removed in the same flash for closed-course use.

Every generation, including the ones others turn away

Gen 4–5

Fully supported for years — straightforward flashes with well-proven calibrations.

Gen 6 — long considered locked

The Gen 6 was unreadable for a long time. We developed a working read/write path and now flash it routinely, including speed limiter removal. One recent Gen 6 went from a maximum of 0.6 bar of boost to 0.8 bar; the owner saw an indicated 180 km/h where the van previously ran out at 160.

Gen 7–8 — DENSO 3rd-gen ECU, via OBD

The current DENSO third-generation ECU reads and writes through the OBD port. Read takes about 30 minutes, the write about 10 — the van is in and out the same day.

Gen 9 (2026–) — new-generation DENSO ECU, first in Japan

From Gen 9, Toyota switched to a new-generation DENSO ECU and every method used on earlier HiAce models stops working. Very few shops anywhere can touch it; we developed support in-house and completed what we believe to be Japan’s first Gen 9 HiAce flash. Details are in our Gen 9 case study (Japanese).

Same engine, same capability: Hilux and Prado

The 1GD-FTV also powers the Hilux and Land Cruiser Prado, and our calibrations carry across the family — see our Prado case study (Japanese). If you drive one of these outside Japan — Australia especially, where the GUN-series Hilux and H300 HiAce are everywhere — the engine on this page is the one in your vehicle.

DPF stays on. EGR-off is optional.

Our standard Stage 1 makes its gains with all factory emissions hardware in place — no delete is needed to reach +60 hp / +150 Nm. EGR-off is available as an option in Japan (as on the Gen 6 above), mainly to stop carbon build-up in the intake; overseas it is subject to your local emissions law and in markets like Australia and the EU it is not road-legal. DPF removal is the one thing we do not do: a diesel without its particulate filter fails the Japanese shaken (roadworthiness) inspection outright, so it has never been part of our menu.

For workshops outside Japan

We supply tested 1GD-FTV calibrations to partner workshops through a tune file service and are recruiting international partners — the same model behind our partner network in Japan and our expansion in Europe and Australia. If you have flashing hardware and customers with HiAce, Hilux or Prado diesels, the development work on this page is available to you without repeating it yourself.

FAQ

Q. Do you need to remove the DPF or EGR to get these gains?

No. The full +60 hp / +150 Nm comes from the calibration alone, with the DPF and all factory emissions hardware retained. EGR-off can be added as an option in Japan; DPF removal is not offered — a diesel without its DPF fails the Japanese shaken inspection.

Q. Can you tune the Gen 9 (2026) HiAce with the new DENSO ECU?

Yes. The Gen 9 switched to a new-generation DENSO ECU that defeats the methods used on earlier HiAce models, and to our knowledge we were the first shop in Japan to crack it. We regularly take on Gen 9 owners who have been turned away elsewhere.

Q. I run a workshop outside Japan. Can you supply calibration files for the 1GD-FTV?

Yes. We supply tested 1GD-FTV calibrations to partner workshops through a tune file service, and we are actively recruiting international partners. Contact us with your tools setup (e.g. Autotuner, Kess3) and market, and we will get back to you within one business day.

Get in touch

HiAce or Hilux owner — or a workshop?

Owners: tell us your model, generation and year. Workshops outside Japan: ask about our 1GD-FTV tune file service and partner program — tested calibrations, developed in-house in Japan. We usually reply within one business day. English is fine.
